The one New Year’s resolution you can actually keep

Dining out RSPCA Approved / 17th Jan 2018

While many of us make resolutions at the beginning of a new year, these goals often fall by the wayside as the months progress and life gets in the way. But though gym memberships may lapse and quitting sugar might seem impossible, the choice to seek out higher welfare products is one resolution you’ll definitely be able to keep in 2018.

For those of us who eat meat or eggs, it’s now easier than ever to be a conscious consumer. More and more businesses are sourcing and offering products that have been farmed humanely, meaning that the animal’s needs have been fully provided for from paddock to plate.

If choosing higher welfare food is one of your goals for the year, here are two easy ways to make this the resolution that sticks.

Look for the RSPCA Approved label at the supermarket
Let’s be honest, grocery shopping can be a real chore. Finding products that are well-priced, good quality and animal welfare friendly may seem like an intimidating task, but we’ve got a life hack that will make things easier. Next time you’re at the supermarket looking for chicken, pork, turkey or eggs, keep an eye out for the RSPCA Approved logo on the packaging.

Animals on RSPCA Approved farms are raised according to the RSPCA’s high standards, which means they can do the things they like doing. Chickens are given space to stretch, perch, flap their wings and dustbathe; turkeys have enough room to move and scratch and enjoy perches, straw and toys; while pigs revel in an enriched environment that allows them to forage, socialise and explore.

RSPCA Approved products are available in many supermarkets around the country, which means you’ll be able to ensure your home cooked meals are prepared with humanely farmed ingredients. Nice one!

Dining out? Choose Wisely
When you’re not in the mood to cook, or you’re just looking to catch up with a friend, heading out to a restaurant or café is a great way to enjoy a delicious meal. But how can you tell if your favourite venues are prioritising animal welfare?

The RSPCA’s Choose Wisely initiative helps take the guesswork out of discovering which local eateries are putting humane food on the menu. All you have to do is type your postcode into the search engine, and you’ll learn which restaurants in your area are using cage-free eggs and might also use higher welfare chicken and/or pork. You might be surprised by which venues you find listed. Not only are an increasing number of boutique cafes sourcing higher welfare products, many quick service restaurants have also made the switch. Chains including Nando’s, Grill’d, Zeus Street Greek and Zambrero have all added RSPCA Approved chicken to their menus.

No one is perfect at keeping a New Year’s resolution, but if supporting animal welfare is one of your goals in 2018, it’s great to know that whether you’re eating in or dining out, it’s easy to choose products that have been produced humanely.
