Did you know that 7-Eleven has been using RSPCA Approved chicken for the last few years? That’s right, their range of salads, sandwiches, and wraps are made exclusively with chicken from producers with RSPCA Approved certification.
As one of Australia’s best known convenience retailers, not only are 7-Eleven making it easier for Aussies to find higher-welfare options on the go, they are setting an example for meat chicken welfare that other businesses can follow.
Producers farming meat chickens to the RSPCA’s standard are dedicated to providing better animal welfare for their meat chickens. This means that they are raised in an enriched environment, with space to move and flap their wings, dry friable litter, perches, and lighting regimes for periods of rest and activity, which encourages them to express natural behaviours and is important for their physical and mental wellbeing.
Farms certified by the Scheme are regularly assessed by specially trained Assessors, to make sure the RSPCA’s on-farm requirements continue to be met – all 312 of them. Maintaining welfare during transport and slaughter is equally important, with 109 requirements also regularly assessed. In fact, in 2022 alone, more than 1,030 assessments were conducted at meat chicken farms and abattoirs by RSPCA Assessors as part of Producers’ RSPCA Approved certification.
So, when you’re next in 7-Eleven look out for the RSPCA Approved logo on chicken products!
