Celebrate with kindness this Mother’s Day

For many of us, the mother figures in our lives are the people who teach us the importance of kindness and compassion for each other, and the animals we share this planet with. We know that food is a central way that we celebrate important days in Australia – and Mother’s Day is no different. But unfortunately, many of the ingredients we enjoy eating can come at a cost for the animals that produce them.

The good news is, if you do consume animal products, you can choose higher welfare, and make kindness a priority this Mother’s Day. Here are three ways you can opt for humane food choices while still celebrating this Sunday!

Choose Wisely when eating out for brunch

What better way to say thank you for the years of parenting than shouting your mum to a classic Aussie brunch? While many Australians are choosing not to eat animal products, for many others, eggs are central to a good weekend brunch.

Whether poached, fried or scrambled, you can be certain your eggs will be extra delicious when you know they’re from hens that aren’t confined to a life of misery in a battery cage.

The good news is that plenty of cafes and restaurants are serving cage free eggs, and you can find them easily using the RSPCA’s Choose Wisely website. Find your perfect brunch venue here.

Creating a culinary dish

If you’re more of a DIY type of person, and want to show your mum some love with a home-made meal, remember you can still support animal welfare and choose higher welfare ingredients when whipping up your masterpiece.

Look for the RSPCA Approved logo when shopping, to find higher welfare eggs, chicken, turkey, pork and salmon in a supermarket near you!

Morning or afternoon tea delights

Sometimes you want to have your time with mum all to yourself – and preferably without having to do the dishes after. If you’re buying treats to put on a lovely morning tea for mum, why not look for brands that are committed to freeing hens from battery cages, by using cage free eggs in their ingredients?

You might be surprised to know that well-known family favourites like Arnott’s Biscuits and Bulla Ice Cream are already Cage Free & Proud. Find a list of all the brands here.

From all of us here at the RSPCA, happy Mother’s Day and thank you for choosing kindness!
